Arthritis in Dogs
A client recently contacted Love and Kisses Pet Sitting with a question: “How can I get my large breed dog, who normally drinks water all day, to hydrate after surgery?” As a pet sitter for over 20 years, this was a cause for concern. The sudden change in the dog’s habits was a major red flag.
While a vet visit is always the most crucial step, some immediate, safe tips can be tried.
Tips to Encourage a Dog to Drink
  • Mix in broth: Add a small amount of low-sodium beef or chicken broth to the water bowl.
  • Soften the food: Soak dry kibble in water.
  • Offer ice cubes: The novelty and crunch of ice cubes can encourage fluid consumption.
  • Try a different bowl: Ensure the bowl is clean and filled with fresh, cool water.
  • Give water via syringe: As a last resort, gently syringe small amounts of water into the dog’s mouth, aiming for the cheek pouch, not the throat.
When to Contact a Veterinarian
  • Check the gums: Lift the dog’s lip to check the gums. They should be a healthy pink and moist. If they’re pale, tacky, or if the dog seems cold, call a vet immediately.
  • Look for other signs: Watch for lethargy, sunken eyes, or a lack of appetite, as these can signal a more serious issue.
  • If all else fails: If the dog doesn’t improve with these methods, don’t wait. A post-surgery dog needs to stay hydrated for proper recovery.
The Bottom Line
In any situation where a dog changes its normal behavior, especially after surgery, the first call should be to a veterinarian. Pet sitters are here to support you and your pets, but their health always comes first.
