- Mix in broth: Add a small amount of low-sodium beef or chicken broth to the water bowl.
- Soften the food: Soak dry kibble in water.
- Offer ice cubes: The novelty and crunch of ice cubes can encourage fluid consumption.
- Try a different bowl: Ensure the bowl is clean and filled with fresh, cool water.
- Give water via syringe: As a last resort, gently syringe small amounts of water into the dog’s mouth, aiming for the cheek pouch, not the throat.
- Check the gums: Lift the dog’s lip to check the gums. They should be a healthy pink and moist. If they’re pale, tacky, or if the dog seems cold, call a vet immediately.
- Look for other signs: Watch for lethargy, sunken eyes, or a lack of appetite, as these can signal a more serious issue.
- If all else fails: If the dog doesn’t improve with these methods, don’t wait. A post-surgery dog needs to stay hydrated for proper recovery.
