The Dreaded Cat Pill: Why We All Need a Backup Plan

We’ve all been there: staring down your own cat with a pill in your hand, both of you knowing what’s about to happen. Your cat is a master of evasion, and you’re just hoping to get this over with. But giving your cat medicine doesn’t have to be a battle. There are calmer, more effective ways to get the job done, and sometimes, the best method is to call for help.
Bypass the Battle: Low-Stress Techniques
  • The “Tricky Treat” Method: The simplest method is hiding the pill in a tasty treat. Use a small, strong-smelling morsel like a pill pocket, tuna paste, or a lickable cat treat. The trick is to keep it small so your cat eats it in one or two gulps. I have been known to tuck a pill into the half of a Temptations treat.
  • The Pill Popper Pro: For cats who can sniff out a pill from a mile away, a pill dispenser (or “pill gun”) is a great tool. It lets you administer the pill quickly and safely, without having to risk your fingers.
  • Ask Your Vet About Alternatives: If you’ve exhausted all options, remember that many medications can be specially prepared in liquid, gel, or transdermal forms. It’s always worth asking your vet if this is a possibility. We have had clients get the meds made into small tasty treats, too!
When It’s Time to Call the Professionals
Let’s be honest—some cats are simply not going to cooperate. Repeatedly forcing your cat to take medicine can damage your bond and create fear. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s a good time to consider hiring a professional.
Don’t go another day dreading pill time. Contact a professional to discuss your cat’s needs and how they can support you. Love and Kisses Pet Sitting is here to help!
