How to keep your cat off the Christmas tree
- Hang small sachets of dried orange peels on the lower branches of the tree.
- Place fresh orange peels around the base of the tree and replace them every few days to maintain the scent.
- Create a DIY citrus spray by boiling peels in water and misting the tree branches once the mixture has cooled.
- Secure the tree: Anchor your tree to the wall or ceiling with clear wire or fishing line to prevent it from toppling over.
- Use aluminum foil: Wrap the base of the tree with aluminum foil. Many cats dislike the sound and feel of the foil under their paws.
- Place a barrier: Use an exercise pen or a festive gate around the tree to block access. You can also place pine cones around the base, as cats typically don’t like stepping on them.
- Decorate strategically: Place tempting or fragile ornaments, especially glass ones, higher on the tree or toward the center. Avoid using tinsel, which is a serious hazard if swallowed by your cat.
- Offer distractions: Provide other points of interest for your cat, such as new toys, a catnip-filled scratcher, or a designated “cat tower” in another area.
- Unplug the lights: Always unplug the Christmas tree lights when you are not home or are sleeping to prevent your cat from chewing on the wires.
