Dealing With Cat Spraying: A Guide for Frustrated Pet Owners
There’s no getting around it: cat spray is a big problem. The smell is awful, and the mess is a pain. But before you get upset with your cat, take a deep breath. Yelling or punishing your cat will only make them more stressed and could make the problem worse. The good news is that cat spraying is a solvable issue that starts with understanding what your cat is trying to communicate.
Why is My Cat Spraying?
  • It’s Not About the Litter Box: The primary reason for spraying is not a problem with litter box training. It’s a message to other cats that says, “This is my space!”.
  • Scent of Security: Cats use their scent to create a sense of familiarity and security. When their environment changes, they may spray to reassure themselves that their territory is still their own.
  • Underlying Health: Sometimes, spraying can be a sign that your cat isn’t feeling well. A urinary tract infection or other medical issue could be causing discomfort, leading them to spray to communicate their pain.
Your Plan of Action
  1. See the Vet First: This is non-negotiable. Your first step should always be to rule out a medical issue. A vet can run tests and provide the right medical care if needed.
  2. Calm the Nerves: If your vet gives your cat a clean bill of health, focus on reducing their stress. If they’re seeing stray cats outside, try closing the blinds. If you have multiple cats, make sure each has their own resources to reduce competition. Pheromone diffusers can also help create a calming atmosphere.
  3. Clean it Right: To prevent a cat from re-marking a spot, you need to completely neutralize the odor. An enzymatic cleaner is the most effective solution for breaking down the proteins in the urine.
  4. Consider Spaying or Neutering: If your cat isn’t fixed, this is the most common reason for spraying. Getting them spayed or neutered often resolves the problem completely.
With patience, a little detective work, and some help from your vet, you can get to the bottom of the problem and create a peaceful, scent-free home.
