The Ultimate Guide to a Happy Cat and a Clean Litter Box
Litter box issues can be a major source of stress for both you and your cat. Following a few simple guidelines can make all the difference. As pet sitters, we’ve seen a thing or two about what works!
1. The Right Type of Litter:
- Avoid crystal litters, which can be ingested and cause issues.
- Opt for natural clay, pine, or corn litters, which are safer and more appealing to cats.
2. The Right Number of Boxes:
- Follow the “one-more-than-your-cats” rule. For two cats, you need three litter boxes.
- Scoop daily, or even twice a day, to keep things fresh. Some cats will refuse to use a dirty box.
3. Size Matters:
- Always use the largest litter box you can find.
- A small, cramped space is as unpleasant for a cat as a tiny, dirty bathroom is for a human. Give them room to move around comfortably.
4. Keep It Fresh:
- Change out all the litter every two weeks.
- Give the box a deep clean with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda to keep it sanitized and odor-free.
5. Consider a Litter Cover and Liner:
- A covered box can provide a sense of security for your cat while they do their business.
- Use a litter liner over a layer of newspaper for easy cleanup. Be sure to use extra-large liners to prevent “accidents” from getting on the sides.
6. Use this Liner Hack:
- Lay down several sheets of newspaper, then a large litter liner.
- Fill the liner with 6–8 inches of litter, leaving room around the edges.
- This extra protection helps catch any messes that might occur.
These tips will help ensure a clean, comfortable, and stress-free litter box experience for your feline companion.
