Cold Weather Pet Safety: Keeping Your Furry Friends Warm This Winter
As the winter chill approaches, it’s time to consider the well-being of your pets, especially those who spend time outdoors. Even though a pet may have a fur coat, they are still susceptible to the dangers of cold weather, such as frostbite and hypothermia.
Shelter and Comfort
  • Provide a dry shelter: If a pet must spend time outdoors, provide a shelter that is dry, draft-free, and appropriately sized to hold in body heat.
  • Raise beds: Lift beds or shelters off the cold ground to prevent heat loss. Use bedding like straw or a heated pad designed for pets to keep them warm.
  • Protect from wind: Turn the shelter so its entrance is away from prevailing winds and place it against a building for extra protection.
Nutrition and Hydration
  • Extra calories: Outdoor pets burn more energy to stay warm, so they will need extra food during the winter.
  • Fresh, unfrozen water: Ensure a constant supply of fresh water that isn’t frozen. Heated dog bowls are a good solution for keeping water at a drinkable temperature.
Physical and Mental Health
  • Exercise and stimulation: Combat loneliness and boredom by taking your dog for walks. Remember to shorten walks in very cold weather to prevent injury.
  • Layer up: For short-haired or smaller dogs, consider a sweater or coat for walks.
  • Check paws: De-icing chemicals and salt can be painful and toxic. Wipe your dog’s paws after walks and inspect them for cracks or redness.
A Critical Reminder for Cats
  • Check under the hood: In cold weather, cats and other small animals will seek warmth near a car’s engine. Always bang on the hood or honk the horn before starting your car.
These simple steps can make a huge difference in your pet’s comfort and safety. As a pet owner, you’re responsible for their well-being, and providing warmth and care during the winter is a vital part of that commitment.
