Is Your Cat a Picky Drinker? Hydration Hacks for Fussy Felines
Ever feel like your cat barely touches their water bowl? You’re not alone. Many cat owners worry their furry friends aren’t getting enough water. Since our feline pals are naturally not big drinkers, we have to get a little creative. Here are a few simple tips to help your cat stay hydrated and healthy.
1. Go wet (or at least wetter). Cats evolved to get most of their moisture from their prey. That’s why wet food is such a game-changer. It’s packed with moisture, and transitioning from dry kibble can significantly boost their water intake. Can’t make the full switch? Try adding a little water or low-sodium broth to their dry food.
2. Make water more fun. Does your cat love drinking from the faucet? A pet water fountain might be the answer. The movement and sound of running water mimic a fresh, clean water source and can be irresistible to some cats.
3. Location, location, location. Your cat might not be a fan of where their bowl is located. Try these tricks:
- Put multiple bowls in different rooms to make water easy to find.
- Keep the water dish separate from their food and litter box.
- Use wide, shallow bowls to avoid “whisker fatigue,” which can be uncomfortable for some cats.
4. Add some flair. A splash of low-sodium broth or a cube of frozen tuna water can make a regular bowl of water much more enticing. You can also freeze some tasty broth into ice cubes for a fun and hydrating treat.
Remember, if you’re ever concerned about your cat’s hydration, the best first step is to contact your vet.
