A Thanksgiving Mishap: What a Ham Bone Taught Us
The holidays are a time for sharing, but a scary Thanksgiving story serves as a reminder that not all treats are safe for our pets. A German Shorthaired Pointer was given a ham bone with marrow. The high fat content caused the dog to become violently ill, leading to a trip to the vet, enlarged spleen, and failing kidneys. Thankfully, the dog recovered after weeks of care.
Do not feed these to your pets on Thanksgiving: (Thanksgiving Foods Pets Should Avoid -American Animal Hospital Association AAHA)
  • Bones: Cooked bones, including turkey and ham, can splinter and cause internal damage or blockages.
  • Fatty Foods: Rich sauces, gravy, and turkey skin can cause painful and life-threatening pancreatitis.
  • Onions, Garlic, and Chives: These are toxic to dogs and cats, even when cooked.
  • Grapes and Raisins: Found in some stuffing recipes, these can cause kidney failure.
  • Stuffing: Often contains onions, garlic, and other seasonings that can harm pets.
  • Desserts: Chocolate, xylitol (a sugar-free sweetener), and other sweets are toxic.
  • Alcohol: Even a small amount is dangerous for pets.
A Safe Alternative
Instead of table scraps, give your pets a holiday-themed dog treat. A small amount of plain, unseasoned, and boneless turkey breast is also a safer option.
