- Cut, suck, or apply ice to the area. These outdated methods can cause more harm and are not effective.
- Apply a tourniquet. This can lead to severe tissue damage.
- Stay calm and keep your dog still. Panicking will increase their heart rate and potentially speed the venom’s spread.
- Carry your dog to your car if possible to minimize movement.
- Remove any collars, harnesses, or jewelry that could constrict the area if it swells.
- Head to the nearest emergency vet immediately. Call ahead to let them know you are coming so they can prepare. Time is critical for a positive outcome.
- Observe and relay information safely. Note the snake’s color, size, and markings from a distance if possible, as it can help the vet, but don’t risk a closer look.
