A Pet Sitter’s Warning: A Client’s Story and Snakebite Safety
We recently heard a terrifying story that is an important reminder for all pet owners in Union County, NC and beyond. A neighbor let her dog out in the backyard for about an hour. When the dog came back inside, it wasn’t acting normally. It was rushed to the vet and discovered that a snake had bitten it.
It’s a scary scenario, but knowing what to do next can save your pet’s life. Here’s what you need to know if you suspect your dog has been bitten by a snake.
If You Suspect a Snakebite, DO NOT:
  • Attempt to catch or kill the snake. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to you being bitten as well.
  • Cut, suck, or apply ice to the area. These outdated methods can cause more harm and are not effective.
  • Apply a tourniquet. This can lead to severe tissue damage.
If You Suspect a Snakebite, DO:
  • Stay calm and keep your dog still. Panicking will increase their heart rate and potentially speed the venom’s spread.
  • Carry your dog to your car if possible to minimize movement.
  • Remove any collars, harnesses, or jewelry that could constrict the area if it swells.
  • Head to the nearest emergency vet immediately. Call ahead to let them know you are coming so they can prepare. Time is critical for a positive outcome.
  • Observe and relay information safely. Note the snake’s color, size, and markings from a distance if possible, as it can help the vet, but don’t risk a closer look.
With so many snakes active in North Carolina, especially during warmer months, it’s vital to stay vigilant. Watch your pets carefully when they are outdoors, and be prepared to act quickly in an emergency.
