Pet Sitter Saves Indian Trail, NC Home from Major Water Damage

I often tell people that hiring a professional pet sitter is one of the best decisions you can make when you travel. When you rely on a neighbor, friend, or the kid down the street, they may have good intentions — but they often don’t know what to look for if something goes wrong.

Professional pet sitters are trained to notice when something seems out of place. We aren’t just caring for pets; we’re also keeping a watchful eye on our clients’ homes. During every visit, we check to make sure everything is safe, secure, and functioning properly.

Over the years, this attention to detail has prevented many small issues from becoming major disasters.

🚨 A Holiday Emergency in Indian Trail

During the Christmas holiday, I received an urgent call from one of our pet sitters, Michelle, who was visiting a client’s home in Indian Trail, NC. As she approached the house, she noticed water coming from a white PVC pipe on the exterior of the home — the overflow pipe from the water heater located in the attic. Knowing this was not normal, Michelle immediately investigated further. When she went upstairs to check, she felt water dripping onto her head. Looking up, she saw that water was pooling inside a ceiling light fixture and spreading across the surrounding drywall. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, she contacted me right away. I arrived at the home, and together we entered the attic, where we found water collecting around the hot water heater tank.

Quick Action Prevents Disaster

We immediately called the homeowners, who had recently moved into the house and were unsure what steps to take. Because they were out of town, they were understandably anxious. We suggested contacting Michelle’s husband, who had experience shutting off a water heater. The homeowners agreed and were greatly relieved to have someone knowledgeable available. He arrived quickly, turned off the water heater, and guided us in draining the faucets throughout the home to relieve pressure in the pipes. These actions stopped the flow of water until the homeowners could return.

What Could Have Happened

If Michelle hadn’t noticed the overflow pipe and investigated, the water could have continued running for days. The homeowners were scheduled to be away for five more days. Without intervention, the attic water heater could have caused severe structural damage — including ceilings collapsing, electrical hazards, mold growth, and extensive repairs costing thousands of dollars. Situations like this highlight an often-overlooked benefit of in-home pet sitting: someone is regularly checking on your home, not just your pets.

The homeowners chose to leave the water heater turned off until they returned, confident that their home and pets were in capable hands.
