What Type of Food Should I Feed My Cat?
An important aspect for any Pet Sitter is to understand their clients and their clients pets. In this case the clients are the animals which are looked after. From eating times, sleeping times to play times, all aspects of the needs of the pet should be considered with the utmost care. Pet Sitters are often asked the question What type of food should I feed my cat?’ Cats are natural carnivores so some sort of meat should be in their regular diet. After asking many vets and other experts, the conclusion was drawn to feed cats a combination of dry and wet foods. If the cat is fed solely on one or the other, they can develop gastric problems which can lead to more severe issues. The reason for this is that as with any animal (including ourselves) a variety of protein, fiber, fats, water and carbohydrates are essential for development and maintenance of the body. Dry food often provides the protein, fats, fiber and carbohydrates but the water will only come from wet foods. Of course most cats will drink when they are thirsty but more often than not, cats are renowned to be quite lazy in the drinking department.
What is also useful to know is what type of food a cat should not be fed: Common misconceptions are that milk is a cat’s best friend; however, studies have shown that this can actually be very harmful to the digestive system. Foods that cats should not be given include: chocolate, onions, garlic, coffee, sultanas, raisins, mushrooms, fruit stones, tomatoes and corn cobs. Of course this list is not exhaustive. As a general rule too much of anything is going to be bad for your cat; including fish. So keeping cats healthy and happy with a combination and a variety of food is highly recommended.

Food has always been an issue. I’ve heard that Purina is really bad for cats so I stay clear of that! I like Blue – dry and wet food. It’s nice that all four cats like it as well.
