How To Stop My Dog From Shedding

Today the question is about shedding.  How can I help stop my dog from shedding?

I have a jack russel that sheds horribly, any advice on controlling it? I’ve tried special brushes and shampoos and it doesn’t seem to help, seems to get worse when she is excited or scared . Any ideas?

I would try a grain free food. There is one at Walmart called Pure Balance(black bag) and it is a decent price. You can feed less of it as well since it has no grain in it and more protein. There are other brands as well. Look up foods on dog advisor.com. Do not switch all at once. Do 3/4 gravy train then 1/4 new food then do half and half then full switch. Do 1/4 for at least 3 days then 50-50 for 3 more days at least. It will not stop the shedding immediately but by the second bag you should see some difference

Dogs with food allergies or sensitivities are particularly prone to diet-related shedding. You may need to experiment with a few different foods before you find one that’s right for your dog; consult your veterinarian for advice and recommendations.

Add olive oil or flaxseed oil to your dog’s food. One teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight is a good place to start to help stop shedding also.

Dehydration can lead to dry skin, which can cause excessive shedding and even illness. Make sure your dog always has access to as much clean, fresh water as it wants to drink

It may be best to check with your veterinary also.  Sometimes certain breeds of dogs may do better on certain foods.  I always tell my pet sitting clients to check with vet but I also know that grain free food helps with the shedding of dogs coat.
