Know if Your Pet has Allergies

How to know if your pet has allergies. Can you tell if your pet has allergies? If you are a pet owner, it is mandatory, if not incredibly crucial, for you to keep your pet’s health in check. If you already keep the most viable area for your pet and it still seems to look sick, it may possibly be suffering from some allergies. Here’s how to know if your pet has allergies and what to do about them:

1. Itchy skin and gastrointestinal problems (e.g. diarrhea)

Typically, a combination of these may make one think that their pet has some sort of sickness, but if the pet is looking otherwise healthy when taken to a trip to the vet, then it’s most likely a food allergy. The veterinarian will most likely detect this anomaly and will ask you to change your pet’s diet for at least a month before making a final diagnosis.

2. Red itchy bumps and or blisters, intense scratching, and hair loss

If your pet is suffering from any of these, then it is most likely a contact dermatitis. Your pet may be allergic to carpets, cleaners, or plastic. The most common way to get rid of this is to eliminate the source of the problem one step at a time. If your pet is non-reactive to carpets, then move on to your cleaners and change them.

3. Chewing on the feet, rubbing of the face, respiratory problems, recurrent ear infections

If your pet seems rather restless and seems to have the sniffles every fall or spring, then it is possible that your pet is allergic to certain plants and pollen that show up at some specific seasons such as fall or spring. At times like these, it is best for your pet to avoid going outside or avoiding areas which may trigger atopy or to get it to the veterinarian in order to acquire antihistamines for your pet.

4. Red eyes and discharge

When you look your pet’s eyes and you see these symptoms along with eye squinting and eye scratching or pawing, it is possible that your pet has conjunctivitis or that allergens have entered your pet’s eye. The best treatment to this is to acquire eye drops for your pet which are specifically prescribed by the veterinarian, but first, have your pet checked before you purchase any kind of eye drops.

5. Coughing, gagging and swallowing

If your pet is coughing more than usual, and there seems to be nothing dislodging from your pet’s throat when you check it, then it’s likely a respiratory allergy. This is incredibly dangerous if it is not treated immediately, so get your pet into the veterinarian’s clinic once you suspect any kind of respiratory allergy.

These are only some of the most common symptoms of allergies that can be found in pets, and one should note that there is nothing to worry about once you detect that your pet is getting sick from it. However, you should not waste time and must have it checked immediately. The best prevention methods for allergies are regular trips to the veterinarian and checking its health regularly.
