You have probably heard of the famous CBD oil which noticed incredible growth recently. As it’s known, this product became a go-to natural medication for different health conditions, including pain, stress and anxiety, and inflammation. So, it’s not unexpected that a lot of people started using it in the last several years.
In fact, not only people turned to use this remedy, but also pets, especially CBD for dogs. Yes, pet owners started giving their dogs CBD for anxiety, stress, pain and other health conditions. And, if we take into consideration that people and mammals have an endocannabinoid system, it’s not weird. But how does this oil work on dogs? Let’s have a look at that.
What is CBD Oil?
The famous CBD oil is actually an oil extracted from cannabis or hemp plant. Referred to as cannabidiol, this oil has numerous health benefits on humans, including reducing stress and anxiety, reducing chronic pain and inflammation, reducing oxidative stress, improving sleep, reducing epilepsy seizures, and others. However, there haven’t been many studies on animals to show exactly how CBD oil affects them.
Despite the fact that there’s not enough evidence for CBD’s health benefits on animals, there have been several studies that show positive results. One study on dogs with epilepsy has shown promising results which showed that CBD oil helped reduce their seizures. However, more research needs to be done in order to confirm CBD’s effect on seizures’ reduction.
Another study examined CBD’s effects on dogs with osteoarthritis. As this study has shown, CBD helped reduce the pain dogs feel and improved their activity. Yet, more studies are needed to find how CBD helps dogs.
CBD Oil and the Endocannabinoid System: How it Works?
As mentioned in the introduction, it is believed that CBD oil affects dogs as it affects humans. In other words, it acts on the endocannabinoid system of dogs, as it does on humans. According to what’s known about humans and CBD, it alters the way this system works and helps improve its work. And, since both, we and dogs have the same endocannabinoid system, it’s very logical that CBD works the same way in both cases. But, let’s go deeper into this.
The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating the functions of our body and maintain homeostasis. Some of these functions include pain response, appetite, sleep, mood, and so on. The reason why CBD oil interacts with this system is that it is made of cannabinoid receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids which have a similar structure with those of the CBD oil. Therefore, when dogs (and other mammals) consume CBD oil, the extra cannabinoids they receive add up to the already-existing ones, thus boosting their efficiency and the efficiency of the entire endocannabinoid system.
